Canada: should you fix your energy tariff?

How fixed and variable tariffs actually work in Canada’s market — compiled August 2026.

Ontario’s Regulated Price Plan (RPP) is variable by design — a tiered or time-of-use rate reviewed twice yearly by the OEB. Alberta’s Rate of Last Resort is also variable, resetting regularly with wholesale prices; competitive retailers there do offer genuine fixed-rate contracts, typically 1-5 years. In most other provinces, the single provincial utility’s rate is effectively your only option — there’s no fixed/variable decision to make.
