Moving home in Ireland: setting up your energy
What actually happens when you move in, and what to do about it — compiled August 2026.
No automatic supply — active registration required
Unlike the UK, US or Canada, there’s no deemed-contract safety net. If you move in, you must proactively notify a licensed supplier to open an account in your name — do this promptly.
What to do
Take a meter reading with a photo/timestamp on move-in day.
Find your MPRN (electricity, 11 digits) and GPRN (gas) — on old bills, from the landlord, or by calling ESB Networks/Gas Networks Ireland directly.
Contact a supplier from the CRU’s licensed list promptly to set up the account.
If switching supplier, a statutory 14-day cooling-off period applies.
