Australia: is plug-in solar legal?

Small, plug-and-play “balcony solar” kits are a different product from roof-mounted systems — and their legal status varies sharply by country. Compiled August 2026.

Not legal

Not legal for grid connection — no certified kits exist yet

Plug-in solar (an inverter feeding straight into a standard 10A/15A outlet) currently breaches Australia’s mandatory electrical safety standards, and no tested or certified plug-in system is available to buy here. Researchers (UNSW) and industry are actively pushing for a rule change to allow it, similar to what’s just happened in the UK, but as of August 2026 nothing has changed yet.

Regulations here are changing fast in several of these countries — always confirm the current legal position with your local electrical safety regulator before buying or installing any plug-in solar kit. This is not legal or financial advice.
