Canada: is plug-in solar legal?

Small, plug-and-play “balcony solar” kits are a different product from roof-mounted systems — and their legal status varies sharply by country. Compiled August 2026.

Not legal / largely unavailable

Still out of reach — regulatory barriers remain significant

Plug-in solar remains largely inaccessible in Canada, with real regulatory barriers in provinces like Ontario. A joint US/Canada safety standard (ANSI/CAN/UL 3700) is in development, which would be a prerequisite for any legalisation — but it isn’t finalised yet, so there’s no clear legal path today.

Regulations here are changing fast in several of these countries — always confirm the current legal position with your local electrical safety regulator before buying or installing any plug-in solar kit. This is not legal or financial advice.
