Ireland: is plug-in solar legal?

Small, plug-and-play “balcony solar” kits are a different product from roof-mounted systems — and their legal status varies sharply by country. Compiled August 2026.

Legal only if hard-wired by an electrician

You can’t legally plug it into a wall socket — but a certified install is allowed

Plugging a solar panel directly into a standard Irish wall socket isn’t legal. However, a plug-in-style panel can be legally connected if it’s hard-wired by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor, meeting EN 50549-1 and NC6 export standards — a proper install, not a DIY plug-in. On 23 April 2026, Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien told the Dáil he’s “very open” to legalising genuine plug-and-play systems, but no change has landed yet.

Regulations here are changing fast in several of these countries — always confirm the current legal position with your local electrical safety regulator before buying or installing any plug-in solar kit. This is not legal or financial advice.
