UK: is plug-in solar legal?
Small, plug-and-play “balcony solar” kits are a different product from roof-mounted systems — and their legal status varies sharply by country. Compiled August 2026.

Legal across England, Wales & Scotland from 27 August 2026
BS 7671 Amendment 4, in force from April 2026, formalised the safety rules, and plug-in solar became legal nationwide from 27 August 2026. Certified kits must use a micro-inverter capped at 800W AC output, connect via a standard 13A socket, and each household is limited to one kit. Early estimates put typical savings around £110/year for a single kit.
