US: how much can you actually save by switching?
No national figure exists — genuinely state-by-state — compiled August 2026.
Savings depend entirely on whether your state even has retail choice
Only around 18 states plus DC let you choose your own electricity supplier at all — everywhere else there’s one regulated utility and no switching decision to make. Where choice exists, participation varies hugely: Texas requires nearly everyone to pick a plan (~87% do), Ohio (50%) and Massachusetts (49%) also see high participation, versus California (30%) and Illinois (31%). There’s no reliable national ‘average savings’ figure — check whether your state has retail choice before assuming switching is even possible.
